The WANDLE House - R & R Museum and The Station Restaurant
WANDLE is an acronym for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway and this building was constructed in 1916 by the W & LE with funds contributed by railroaders throughout the system. The 62 room dormitory was first called the Brewster Railroad YMCA. It housed a restaurant, movie theater, bowling alley, and also was used as a community center. Railroaders from Toledo to Pittsburgh made the WANDLE House their home away from home.
This two story u-shaped building sits adjacent to the railroad underpass in the center of Brewster. The WANDLE House was closed in 1975 after falling into disrepair, and in 1976 the Norfolk & Western Railway donated it to the Brewster-Sugarcreek Township Historical Society. Under the leadership of first Wayne Lutes and currently Bob Luckring the building is being restored.
The Station Restaurant is housed inside the WANDLE House, a museum that provides railroad memorabilia and historical artifacts from the Sugar Creek Township area. Visiting the Station Restaurant will return you to the 1950s and 1960s with their wrap around counter top and swivel, pedestal seats. Stop in for that home-cooked breakfast or lunch.
