February 18, 2013 - Street Committee Meeting

Street Meeting

February 18, 2013

6:00

Called to order by Councilman Godwin

Godwin opened with the income tax levy that has passed for 20 years by 75%.  I have heard a big reason why it hasn’t passed the last time if it wasn't for the tree planting part of the levy! I opened the floor to the members.

Tharp stated he was a 100% for putting it on the fall ballot, a lot of what he heard was that the trees might have been the problem. He would like to form a street committee with residents and go door to door and pass out brochures.

Godwin discussed some percentages like 25% excluding the trees, or 33 percent and including sidewalks.

Duff agrees 100% the village planted trees and didn’t fix sidewalks the idea from Godwin is a good one.

Hilliard's only concern was there have been some sidewalks replaced by residents.

Godwin stated it would give lots of citizens relief from the villages mistakes of certain trees being places in bad spots.

Mayor stated the trees are more valuable than the slab of concrete.

Duff agrees that the sidewalks should be added.

Huff stated being Tree CityUSA we need to spend 2 dollars per resident on trees, tree maintenance, and tree trimming.

Huff stated sweet gums planted on 5th   Street will be causing a lot of damage!

Hilliard stated without the levy how much is going in the street fund?

Kris King stated 0

Huff said well take the streets out the general fund.

Duff wants put on the ballet and explained to the citizens.

Godwin stated the big issue is informing the residents that only people that are working in the village will be paying the extra tax, retired people and unemployed will not be burdened by it. Most people who will pay it will be people who do not live in the village and that are the bottom line.

Tharp stated all council must decide what kind of town they want to live in.

Huff stated he will vote against it and campaign against it.

Hilliard any other way to raise money.

Duff/Godwin/Tharp will all go door to door.

Hartman stated over 80% of the tax is from non-residents of the Village of Brewster

Mayor stated we need a game plan to explain what will be done with the money if its passed.

Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
